Most people spend time trying to stay healthy.
They pay attention to how they look, how their bodies function, and what they are eating.
They work out their heart with cardio, and take care of it.
However, not everyone thinks about how to keep their brain healthy. It is such an important part of our body, so it should be cared for as a priority.
How to take care of your brain:
1. Exercise – This can prevent or reduce your risk for Alzheimer’s and similar dementia conditions. It also improves blood flow to the brain, making it work better and get more nutrients!
2. Quit smoking – Smoking not only hurts your lungs and circulation, it can also harm all of your organs, including the brain. Quitting at any time will reduce your risk, but sooner the better.
3. Avoid and reduce sweets – High blood sugar, even without having diabetes, can put you at risk for dementia. Candy, sodas, cakes, and high sugar foods should be avoided or reduced. Sugar isn’t good for you anyway, so it helps you in general to stay away.
4. Socialize – It is important to a human’s brain to socialize and interact with others. The more in-depth the activity and the more people, the better. The stimulation can be a lot at once, but it is great for your brain! Try gradually increasing the crowd size you interact with. Start with two, and work it up! You can also work out your brain by learning something new!
5. Prevent falls and wear helmets – Any injury to any part of the head can injure the brain. Certain injuries can leave you unable to move or speak. Don’t do stupid things that could give you any kind of injury in general. If you can’t be super careful, at leas always protect your head whenever possible.
Treat your brain like you would a muscle. Exercise it, feed it, protect it, and enjoy it! Time changes the brain, so use it all you can for as long as you can.
